On its second stop on tour, e-flux book co-op takes up temporary residence at threewalls, Chicago, programmed in collaboration with Open Practice Committee & Logan Center Exhibitions, University of Chicago.
Costly and often monopolistic approaches to the distribution of art books has resulted in a situation in which it is common for not only the author but also the publisher to receive little to no revenue from book sales. As a possible alternative, e-flux presents the book co-op: a mobile bookstore with over 600 titles on contemporary art, theory, and criticism from over 100 international art centers, artist-run spaces, and independent publishers. This temporary model for more equitable distribution in art publishing displays and sells books on behalf of the cooperative’s member institutions. e-flux book co-op was first presented in the Summer of 2011 at Art Basel as part of a larger e-flux project. It was brought to the New York Art Book Fair in the Fall of 2011 where it was located in the courtyard at MoMA PS1. At the fair’s close, MoMA PS1 invited the book co-op to stay in the courtyard where it lived until May 2012. White Flag Projects in St. Louis hosted the co-op on its first stop on tour between September 8–December 15, 2012.
