Amateur Psychology is the inaugural release of Satellite Music Series. It will be available digitally and on cassette on September 19. Amateur Psychology is debut album of Joe Jeffers, and it features Jaimie Branch, Zhalih, Kevin Carey, Jim Cannon, and Jackie B Free. Jeffers describes the album is a “self-help audiobook” that maps his musical influences, offering avant and dance productions, punctuated by voice and field recordings.
Joe Jeffers is a New York based composer from Chicago. His enigmatic sound ranges from techno, house, and Lo-fi hip hop to sound art. Jeffers briefly studied fashion at Parsons, and fine art at the University of Illinois at Chicago, until his frustration with the economics of art education led him to founding an alternative education platform for artists and musicians on a farm in Ohio. Working closely with Jaimie Branch, Harold Arts was able to host over a thousand artists and musicians over 10 years. Its makeshift studio becoming the summer home to some of Chicago and New York’s most innovative experimental musicians. During this time, Jeffers educated himself in the tools of electronic music production, taking on sound art commissions, experimenting with improvised ensembles, and later pursuing rap production through the formation of Palace Sound. This work led him to Brooklyn, where he has acted as production, DJ, talent buyer and friend to many of the city’s finest musicians.
Jeffers has collaborated with Eartheater, The Era Dance Crew, Deem Spencer, Khallee, MIKE, Prison Religion, Sir Teemo, Trousseaux, and Zulu P. As a fixture of the New York underground club culture, Jeffers has shared stages with Antwan, Busta Rhymes, Gaika, Gantman, Oshun, Parliament Funkadelic, Princess Nokia, and many more. He has also released music as Joey Desktop, and he is one half of sound and movement duo, Felt and Known.
Jaimie Branch is a Brooklyn based improvisor, composer, and trumpeter whose work is primarily focused on expanding the sonic and technical limitations of the trumpet in free jazz and improvised musics. In May 2017, Branch released her debut record as a leader, Fly or Die (International Anthem 011), to critical acclaim. In June 2017, Rolling Stone wrote that Branch’s music “Sounds like: Art Ensemble of Chicago jamming at an art punk loft.” Fly or Die proceeded to land on a number of 2017 year end lists including: The New York Times, NPR, WIRE, Stereogum, Aquarium Drunkard, Bandcamp, Dusted, and more. Branch believes that all the music in the Universe lives in a cloud just above our heads and that if you listen, you can hear it.
Ase Manual is a club music producer from New Jersey. Manual’s creative desire found an outlet when he laid eyes on his cousin Ola’s home studio. A rapper at the time, Ola featured Ase on one of his tracks — this served as his first introduction to home recording, setting off Manual’s musical journey with this newfound DIY approach to making music. Manual’s venture into production began with a full dive into the sound defining his home state: Jersey Club. Producing music locally and globally since 2016, Manual has defined himself by his fresh take on Electronic Music: providing a soul-driven sound seamlessly maneuvering between booty-bounce club bops and hypnotizing melodic jams. In 2016, Manual released his debut album Gems on the New Jersey-native’s own imprint Like That Records. 2017 followed with an assortment of highly-praised club single releases, “Feel It,” “Aye Ok,” and “50,000 Just to Book Me.” In 2018 Ase Manual released a remix rendition album of the Black Panther film soundtrack, tapping some of the most prominent emerging electronic producers to create a boldly movable conceptual reimagining of the mostly bar-riddled Afro-futuristic rap soundtrack. Ase has also produced scores used in ad campaigns for Adidas and New Balance.
