As part of the collaboration between the Norman Foster Institute (NFI) and Bupa, the “Health and City” module of the NFI Programme on Sustainable Cities will be held from May 20–22, 2024.
The focus will be on fostering the development of healthy and climate-resilient cities. This module will empower future urban planners, advance research on climate resilience and health, mobilise stakeholders and utilise cutting-edge technology to create data-driven design interventions.
The NFI, which is committed to making cities healthier, includes in its Academic Body various professionals and practitioners whose expertise lies in this field, including Joseph G. Allen, Director, Healthy Buildings Program, T.H. Chan School of Public Health, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts, United States; Beatriz Colomina, Co-Director of the Media and Modernity Program; Howard Crosby Butler Professor of the History of Architecture, Princeton University, Princeton, New Jersey, United States; Laila Iskandar, Co-Founder, CID CONSULTING; Former Minister of State in the Government, Egypt; Henk Ovink, Special Envoy for International Water Affairs, Amsterdam, The Netherlands; and Susana Saíz Alcazar, Director, Arup Spain; Director, Arup’s Climate and Sustainability Services Portfolio within the Europe Region; Global Leader for the Human Health and Wellbeing Skills Network; Europe Leader of Climate and Sustainability, Arup, Madrid, Spain.
To culminate this module, the “Healthy Cities” Public Debates, organised by the Norman Foster Foundation and supported by Sanitas, will address the significant overlap between healthcare and urban living. It will begin with keynote presentations and a speaker debate, highlighting the essential role of city leadership in adopting nature-centric and public health policies.
The focus will then shift towards practical interventions informed by data-driven research, aimed at rejuvenating the urban built environment with a focus on health and landscaping. This phase will explore strategies to enhance ecological balance within urban spaces.

The public debates are free and open to the public, with a limited capacity, after registering via Eventbrite. Access is granted on a first-come basis. Please note that registration does not guarantee entry once full capacity has been reached. The public debate will be held in English without translation.
