Mags Harries & Lajos Héder Spectral Horse Location: Spectacle Island, Boston Harbor, MA (Proposal 2006) Size: 400’ x 250’ Materials: Lighting and light reflective materials Description: Spectacle Island lies in a very prominent position in Boston Harbor. The north side faces the main shipping lanes; the primary take‐off and landing strips of Logan Airport; and popular recreation areas in South Boston. Once the city dump, Spectacle Island is in position to be a primary icon of Boston Harbor, a visual gateway from the air and sea. It greets visitors and focuses residents' attention on the harbor. The design proposed on the north face of the island to delineate with lights and light reflecting material (crushed clam shells) the giant figure of a running horse, the Spectral Horse. For part of the long and checkered history of Spectacle Island, about 100,000 horses were "rendered" on the island during the 19th century. These horses hauled the dirt that filled much of the marsh land of Boston. In death they were processed on the island into hides, glue, stock, horsehair and Neat's Foot Oil. They were the only innocents in the history of exploitation on this piece of land. What creatures better deserve to be celebrated? What better way to acknowledge what happened on this piece of land? 1. Spectral Horse‐ View of the Horse from the park at Castle Island 2. Spectral Horse‐ Aerial of the Horse during the day
