Title: ‘Untitled’ Description:

This is a sketch for a site-specific work wherein the façade of a gallery in Mumbai is superimposed by another façade in London, constructed by means of a photographic reference taken by the artist many years ago while in London. The contemporary façade of London (which always remained mysterious to the artist) is imposed on the British built colonial architectural building façade of Mumbai.

The sketch here is a proposal for constructing a superficial façade over an existing building in Mumbai. The arched windows of the Mumbai building become the windows of the façade from elsewhere. The curtains are put from the inside of the building reflecting the inhabited place from the reference photograph. The awning, functioning exhaust fan, letterbox, railing, etc. come into existence on the superficial façade.

The building in the reference façade (London) always remained mysterious, though the photograph was taken by me while wandering around in London. The window being bigger than the door was quite awkward to me. The size of the door which probably remains the only access to the railing appears smaller than the human scale. I have no idea about the function of the place from inside; nevertheless ‘inhabitant’ remains its central character.

The building in Mumbai which is located in the A-list Zone of heritage was difficult in acquiring permissions from the MMC (Mumbai Municipal Co-operation) to create such a work, and hence it remains an unrealized project/ idea.
