Untitled (‘Memory: Un/Successful, In/Complete’) - - Oil and acrylic paints, inkjet prints, tissue paper, and straw on canvas, 80X120 cm approx. (2010-11)

Initiated during a course at the Slade School of Fine Art, this experimental painting developed over a period of months, through processes of layering and erasure. I covered the original black and white background image, which was painted from life, with collaged fragments, large coloured blots, and coloured lines applied straight from the paint tube. In this way, I gradually ‘erased’ the original image, whilst the painting kept changing, combining a reflection of my ephemeral perceptions. The painting also relates to and depicts memory, in the way that our recollection (of past events, thoughts, and feelings) is often transferred onto present experience, yet at the same time being ‘incomplete’ and ‘unsuccessful’.
